Will the Nintendo 3DS be a success or a flop?

Nintendo 3DS: will it succeed?

I was chatting to someone on a forum the other day who questioned whether the Nintendo 3DS will be a success… well they were more blunt than that and said it would be a flop.

To put it in context, we were chatting about the uptake of 3D devices and whether they would ever really take off like most people have expected. This eventually turned in to a conversation about whether the 3D effects will translate well on such a small screen as the 3DS has, and whether this will be a big enough drawcard to attract all the iPod Touch/iPhone games players.

My friend argued that we now have a generation of kids and parents that are used to the convenience of games that are cheap and can be instantly downloaded and played on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Not to mention that Apple is very trendy at the moment and parents will love the fact that the games are not going to cost them an arm and a leg… all of which he translated to mean that the new 3DS will be a flop.

However, in my opinion comparing the Apple iPhone/iPod Touch to a pure bred games console like the Nintendo 3DS is as useful as comparing apples to oranges (update: I just noticed there’s a pun in there – let’s say it was intended!).

Yes I think that Apple is gaining strength by numbers with the amount of games that are readily and cheaply available on the iPhone and iPod Touch, but the Nintendo 3DS will have it over them in terms of quality. The Nintendo 3DS already has a stable full of top notch games ready for launch (including Super Street Fighter IV: 3D edition, Star Wars Clone Wars III 3D and Ridge Racer 3DS, all of which I chat about in my post ‘3 Must Have Games for the Nintendo 3DS’), and this list will continue to expand with quality titles such as The Sims 3, Mario Kart 3DS, Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D and many others!

Not only is it an argument about quantity vs quality, but most people are used to having more than one device for different purposes (at least until the day someone creates the magical all-in-one hand held, possibly holographic, device that does everything perfectly). I’m sure you even know people that have both the iPhone and iPod Touch, so if they’re interested I’m sure there’s nothing stopping them from buying the Nintendo 3DS as well.

I think the 3DS will be a big success for Nintendo, not just because of the 3D effects without glasses that it promises, but mostly because of its fans who already love the company and its characters.

Oh, and after all that let’s not forget the graphics – the previews I have seen for the 3DS look awesome so far!

For what it’s worth, I can’t wait to get my hands on the Nintendo 3DS.

Update: I just checked a couple of the online game shops (EB Games and Game.com.au) and it looks like EB have already sold out of the Nintendo 3DS. Looks like it’s already a hit!

3 Must Have games for the Nintendo 3DS

The Nintendo 3DS arrives in Australia on March 31st so let’s take a look at 3 of the best games that will be available to make the most of the 3DS’ features such as the gyroscope, pedometer and of course the 3D effects!

Super Street Fighter IV: 3D edition

Storming in at the number one spot, Super Street Fighter is easily the pick of the bunch for the Nintendo 3DS launch – it’s everything you remember from the original plus a little extra. The game includes all 35 characters that appeared over the various versions including their variable costumes and colours (even so, Ryu or Ken will still be my first pick!) The 3D effects are also pretty nifty with an over-the-shoulder view when fighting.

IGN has given Super Street Fighter IV: 3D edition on the 3DS a score of 8.5 out of 10.

Lego Star Wars Clone Wars III 3D

This might be my own bias showing through but I can’t really go past a good Star Wars game, especially one as cool as Lego Star Wars Clone Wars III 3D. The Lego range of games are known for having a bit of tongue-in-cheek humour and are fun to play through a few times, and this is sure to be taken up a notch with the 3D capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS. There are 20 story based missions and 40 bonus levels to play through in this game and the 3D capabilities of the 3DS make for some pretty cool effects!

Todd Kenreck from In-Game gives Lego Star Wars Clone Wars III on the 3DS a score of 9 out of 10.

Ridge Racer 3D

Ridge Racer 3D was a strong competitor for the number 2 spot, beaten only by my bias for anything Star Wars (it was really hard to pick my top 3 launch games for the Nintendo 3DS and put them in some kind of order!). Ridge Racer 3D could quite possibly have the best 3D effects of all the launch titles – it really is a great looking game and is sure to make you happy about your decision to buy a Nintendo 3DS! If you like driving games, you should definitely check out Ridge Racer 3D.

IGN has given Ridge Racer 3D on the 3DS a score of 8.5 out of 10.

Well that’s it for the top 3 Nintendo 3DS launch titles. I also recommend taking a look at Nintendogs + Cats 3D and Pilotwings Resort 3D – maybe I should have just made this a top 5 games for the Nintendo 3DS launch? Oh well, next time!

Is Crysis 2 better than Call of Duty: Black Ops?

The comparisons are inevitable – two highly anticipated first person shooters available on all the major gaming platforms, xbox 360, PS3 and PC (the first Crysis was available only on the PC and was legendary for the ‘Crysis Stress Test’ – if your gaming PC could run Crysis it could run just about anything).

A quick scan around the net reveals a lot of excitement around the release date of Crysis 2, much the same as the fanfare that surrounded Call of Duty: Black Ops when it was first released (Call of Duty: Black Ops’ release date was November 9, 2010 and Crysis 2 has a release date of March 24, 2011).

On many forums there are claims that Crysis 2 is easily the game of the year but given that we’re only 3 months in to the year I think it might be a bit early to make that call – especially with some big title games such as Max Payne 3, Battlefield 3, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, Gears of War 3, and Killzone 3 (wow, it’s the year of the threequel!) all coming out in 2011.

On the other hand there are more than just a few comments floating around that think ‘anything is better than Call of Duty’. Just a little bit harsh, and if you go looking you’ll quickly find comments that think Black Ops is the greatest game on Earth.

So it really just boils down to your own personal opinion, but if you’re asking me, my pick is Crysis 2.

P.S. has anyone played Black Ops on the DS? Is it any good?

Ash.
